Basch knew from the start of the -- rather unlikely, in his opinion, even if it has lasted a comparitively long time -- relationship that one day, he'd probably have to watch Balthier walk out. He didn't think he'd find himself sat up in bed watching Balthier make the decision, looking down at the city he hates -- the back-stabbing and the hypocrisy and the need for propriety as much as the feeling of being caged and closed in. He decided right from the start he'd be noble about it, let Balthier go if he needed to, and so he steeled himself to caution, to keeping himself back.
He fears now that he hasn't been cautious enough. It already hurts, and Balthier is still right there.
