Summary: River tells Simon where to look. For Urania, the Greek muse of astronomy.
"Sailors back on Earth-that-was would look to the North Star," River says, poking her head through the door into the infirmary. Simon looks up, trying to find a smile for her -- knowing it's useless because she knows his moods better than he does, but trying all the same. She rolls her eyes at him. "When you're lost, find the North Star to guide your steps."
"We're in space, though, mei-mei, not on Earth-that-was," he says, quietly.
"There's always a North Star."
"Should I go up to the cockpit and look for one, then?" Simon asks, laughing a little now at the thought of actually doing that -- and then suddenly sad, too, at the thought that Wash won't be up there anymore, will never be up there again. It's no longer Wash's place: it belongs to River, and to Mal. As he thinks that, River frowns slightly, closing her eyes. And then she opens them and gives him a smile that's pure mischief, a smile he remembers well.
"He is up there, yes," she says, and turns, skipping away to find Kaylee and leaving Simon staring after her and wondering if she really means what he thinks she means.
