He'd always wanted to be more than an object to Seifer. He didn't understand why Squall fired Seifer's imagination, why Seifer treated Squall like a person to be respected, a worthy rival. Zell wanted to be like his grandfather, yes, of course, but by the time he'd been in Garden two years, his new goal was making Seifer look at him. Not to tease, not to taunt, but with some kind of -- well, admiration.
Zell watches Seifer watch Squall, now. It still hurts, an old restless ache. No matter how many times he tells himself Seifer is an asshole.
