"I thought I'd find you out here."
Squall looks up at Irvine, shaking his hair back from his face, and for a moment, there's a hint of a smile curving his lips. "Soon, you'll be thinking you know me. Is there something wrong? Does Cid need me or something?"
"Nothing urgent." Irvine shrugs slightly and, without waiting for an invitation -- knowing there won't be one -- he sits down next to Squall, so that their elbows brush. "What are you running from this time?"
"Now you are thinking you know me."
"I'm right, though," Irvine says, and he watches Squall, the way he bites his lip, the way his hair brushes his cheekbone, the way his eyes are at odds with the edge in his tone; soft, amused, as if after all he wouldn't mind being known.
"If I was running from something, really, it followed me," Squall says, at last, ignoring what Irvine said. He looks up, echoing Irvine's thought: "I don't mind, though."
Irvine smiles.
