Summary: Auron still sees a young girl there.
"I feel as if I'm surrounded by children," Auron says, his voice roughened just a bit by well-hidden affection as he watches Tidus flirt, none too subtlely, with Yuna, and watches Rikku darting about getting everything done with the energy that, indeed, belongs to the young. Lulu looks up at him with the faintest hint of a smile, crossing her arms under her breasts and shifting her weight.
"You are surrounded by children, but we aren't all children," she says, and there's a hint of rich laughter in her voice. Auron looks at her, thoughtfully, seeing a young woman who grew up too fast, who forced herself to. She's beautiful, yes, but there's a hardness to it, like diamond. Once upon a time, there was a potential for a woman with long loose hair and an easy smile and a laugh like the open sky, free and bright.
The girl is held in and the woman held out, the former hidden away and the latter, strong and ready for anything, thrust forward to take life's knocks. It's to the girl he speaks, smiling just a little. "There's always a time to be a child, of course."
Lulu is as sharp as tacks, and she doesn't miss his meaning. Her chin lifts just a little more. "Don't mistake me, Sir Auron. I know that. But my time of being a child like them died with the one I was a child with."
"I'm sorry."
She looks at him, and then she does laugh. "You're not. You're thinking that I don't know what I'm talking about. You think there's still a little girl inside me -- "
"I know there is."
She turns to face him properly, like a challenge, her arms still crossed, her eyes intent on his. "Really?"
He knows her heart is thumping fast, like it used to, like it does in a hard fight when there's just a little more risk than usual. He knows that she's looking at him, and seeing a man she could love, and not seeing all of the reasons why not. He sees a young girl behind her eyes, not ready for the barbed words and derisive laughter of the woman -- I'll add you to my list -- and he smiles at that girl again.
"Really," he says, and then turns away to watch Tidus and Yuna. "You want to be careful. It's a bad idea to try and smother her. She's wiser than you."
