Narnia: Hell in Heaven

Fandom: Narnia
Pairing: Caspian/Lucy
Warnings: Sap
Rating: G
Summary: No love is wrong in Aslan's country.

"Caspian?"

Lucy's concerned voice made him start, but he covered the surprise with a gracious smile as he reached for her hand, kissing her fingers. And if his lips lingered a moment too long on her fingers, she didn't notice it. "Lucy."

"You look sad," she said, sitting beside him, and he tried not to notice her too much, even though his awareness of her was so horribly strong, so that he could almost taste her breath on his face when he turned to face her, and he was longing to reach up and push her hair out of her face, brush his hand across her cheek. He could only imagine what it would be like to kiss her, this queen who had ruled so many years before him who, unlike his own queen, had ridden to wars and had never married.

"No one is ever sad here," he said, lightly, "and no one is ever bored."

"In my world, we called this place heaven," she said, almost shyly, looking around at it, "But the word got overused. Heaven was just silly little things like, oh, tasting a nice cake or wearing a lovely dress or having a lovely night... and this place is more than that."

"In your world, do they say that you're in heaven when you're in love?" he asked, trying to keep his tone light.

"Sometimes," Lucy said, and there was a dreamy look on her face. Caspian tried not to feel jealous, wondering why it made him feel so angry to see that look on her face when she spoke of love.

"I suppose it could be something else, though... whatever the opposite of heaven is," he said softly, only half wanting her to hear, looking down at his lap.

"Hell? I suppose it could be..."

"I think being in love with the wrong person could make even heaven feel like hell," he whispered, looking at her almost hopefully, but trying to hide it, trying to make it sound like a purely philosophical point.

"Poor dear Caspian," she whispered back, and her hand reached over to find his, "are you in love with the wrong person?"

He couldn't answer her, he just squeezed her hand slightly, and she squeezed back. They sat there in silence for a while, and Caspian began to feel rather happy about the way her hand rested in his, and he let the happiness of the place and her presence soothe him a little.

Then she spoke. "I fell in love on the deck of a ship, with the man I helped to make king."

"You ruled hundreds of years before that man... but when you fell in love with him, you were younger than him," Caspian whispered, and he thought his heart might burst from the sudden sweet hope, and the knowledge that nothing ever turns out perfectly.

She moved a little closer to him, resting her head against his shoulder. "When I was queen, there wasn't a man in the whole of Narnia I would marry..."

"Lucy..."

"Don't say anything more," she said, smiling faintly, putting her fingers up to his mouth to hush him. And then she kissed him.
