Her father was a great man. A brave one.
She never needed to be told that. She knew from the hours she spent with him, the days spent at his side. She knew from watching him work, the steady measured movements of his hands and the calm, easy expression on his face.
She would follow him around (from home to home, at first, once upon a very long time ago, and then from man to man on the battlefield) and she'd carry his things. He told her she was the greatest help he could have, his little Safiya, his clever Safiya. He loved her, taught her what he could, and she adored him. She adored the steadiness of his hands as he worked on a man's wounds in the middle of a battlefield, the steadiness of his voice as he eased a young boy into a quiet, peaceful death.
She tries to be him, now. Tries to be Djaq, tries to be their father, tries to be everyone but scared little Safiya whose hands always trembled when her father asked her to help heal a man.
Djaq holds her head high, sets her teeth in exactly the way her brother used to, and gets to work, just like her father did, just like her brother did. She will make them proud of her, wherever their souls are now, just as she was proud of them.
