Somewhere along the way, Quistis forgot what she wanted and started going along with what people expected. When Seifer came back to Garden, studied under her, people expected her to fall in love with him, expected her to redeem him, to pull him up with her and make him something. And so she went along with it, and now, laying beside him, his head on her shoulder, she has to admit to herself that it was stupid. That every time he touches her something squirms in her stomach, that his kisses don't do anything for her.
She wonders how long it'll take her to have the guts to admit that to him. She wonders how long it'll take him to heal afterward. She wonders how it can be that she just doesn't care, that she has such a void inside her.
Quistis stares up at the ceiling, wishing there were more light so she could count the cracks. She can feel his slow, even breathing against her skin and she strokes his hair, gentle, easy movements, like she's soothing him. And, just once more, she tries to force herself to care that she'd leave him broken if she knew how.
