FFVIII: Understand

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: None
Warnings: Angst, deathfic
Rating: G
Summary: Squall starts to understand friendship. For [livejournal.com profile] 30_friends.

Squall's never known what it's like to love a living, breathing mother -- he's never understood the whole concept of the unconditional love of a family because it was taken away from him too soon and returned to him too late. He doesn't quite understand Zell's pain, but he's there, walking down to Balamb with him, because Zell asked him to and because somehow he feels he has to.

Nobody asks him to reach out and put his hand on Zell's shoulder, no one asks him to step forward and say that Zell's mother was a good woman, a good mother, but Zell reaches up to touch his hand, clutching it like a lifeline, and Squall knows that he's said the right thing, done the right thing.

Nobody asks him to walk back to Garden with Zell, and nobody tells him that Zell would rather sit and talk -- talk and cry and talk through his tears -- than go to the training center, but somehow Squall manages to get that right, too. Sitting with his arms around Zell, letting him cry, he has no idea what the right words are, but he knows that Zell trusts him to find them -- but won't mind if he doesn't.

He might not understand family so well, but he's starting to understand friendship.
