Summary: It'd been a while.
"It's been a while."
Heero looked up at Duo. He felt tongue tied and he hated it, looking back down to his coffee, running a hand through his hair and sneaking another glance at Duo. "Yeah. Too long, maybe."
"Definitely!" Duo said, smiling, and he took a long gulp of his coffee. Heero watched him, meaning only to look him over, see what had changed, remember what hadn't. But instead he found himself fascinated by the movement of Duo's throat as he swallowed, the vibrations as he spoke. "So, how've you been?"
"Doing well for myself," Heero said, quietly, with a slight gesture around the house as if to encompass his fortunes.
"You really think so?"
At first, Heero thought that Duo thought he was wrong, but then he caught sight of Duo's smile, and found himself smiling back, "Yes."
"Wow," Duo said, sitting back a little and looking into his empty coffee cup. "I never thought you'd be satisfied."
Heero thought back to the way he'd been after everything was over, moving from job to job, putting his all into something and more, running himself dry working and still feeling as if he wasn't doing enough. "Me neither."
"Glad to see you like this," he said, smiling his cheerful grin and stretching out. He'd gotten taller, Heero noticed, his gaze approving. His hair had got longer, too, the long thick braid almost long and heavy enough to be counted as a lethal weapon. He saw that Duo was content, taking life as it came, happy with whatever came his way.
"Do you want some more coffee?" he asked, interrupting his own inspection, reaching for Duo's cup and letting their fingers brush on purpose. He looked up, and met Duo's eyes, and felt that Duo was seeing him just as he had seen Duo. He hoped that he looked the same.
"More coffee would be great," Duo said, smiling.
Heero felt sure that Duo had seen potential between them too. And both were content to wait and see if it came their way. There was plenty of time for that.
