Summary: Simon's sixteenth birthday. For
30_shinyfics.
It was his sixteenth birthday. It was seven in the morning and Simon really wasn't in the mood to be moving anywhere, caught up in his own private world of dreams and oblivion. And River was bouncing on his bed, dragging him right out of that cozy little world. "River, what're you -- "
"Happy birthday!"
He sat up a little when it was obvious she wasn't going to give in, running his fingers through his hair, frowning at how long it'd gotten. His father would no doubt take him out for an expensive birthday haircut before giving him an expensive new suit and informing him that he had to keep up appearances and refuse all offers of wine at his party that evening. "River..."
She made a face at him. "You're getting old. And grumpy. I bought you a present."
"River -- "
"Be careful, or you'll wear it out."
Simon gave River a confused look, running his fingers through his hair again until he was sure it wasn't sticking up in odd directions as it usually did on a morning. From the look on River's face, he wasn't really suceeding. "Huh?"
"My name."
He stuck his tongue out at her in return when she made a face at him, sitting up a little more. "You said you bought me a present?"
"Yes. To remind my very special big brother that he's not that old yet."
She held it out. She hadn't wrapped it -- Simon had visions of her trying, getting annoyed at the overall squashiness of the parcel and the tendency of the paper to tear, and finally giving up -- and he saw immediately what it was. He also saw the look in her eyes -- despite the mischief, she meant every word of it.
It was a teddy. Small, grey, undeniably cuddly, and with a bright red ribbon tied neatly around its neck.
River leaned in and gave him his birthday kiss. Then she punched his shoulder seventeen times -- one for each year and an extra for look, and then slipped out of the room again, leaving him to look at the teddy she'd given him.
It was... cute.
And he wasn't too old for teddies, at least not ones she gave him.
