"You don't have to worry," River tells him, ice-cool and calm. She stands in the doorway of the infirmary, a weapon in her hand, her expression closed down, determined. Simon looks up, syringes in his hand: his way of calming himself down. She smiles at him. "We can fight them. The Reavers, they die. They die the same as anyone else, in the end. It just takes longer."
It makes him shudder to hear her say that. He puts down his syringes, full with enough of a dose to kill instantly. He goes over to her and puts his arms around her, holds her close and feels all the trembling tension in her limbs. "I don't want to fight. Not after -- "
Not after what happened before.
River moves closer to him, her cheek against his shoulder. "I can protect you."
He shakes his head, his eyes flickering to the syringes, laid out on the small table where his instruments sit during operations. He feels her tense even more. "I want to protect you."
The tension eases. "You always have."
"Not well enough."
She doesn't answer. Her eyes are closed and her arms move up, wrapping around his neck. She pulls him down to her, kisses him softly, and she keeps her eyes closed. He kisses back, waiting, knowing she's going to say something.
"They come," she says, simply. Simon takes a deep breath and reaches for a syringe.
Serenity shudders around them.
