Narnia: Longings

Fandom: Narnia
Pairing: Caspian/Eustace
Warnings: Sap
Rating: PG
Summary: It all fills him with longings he doesn't understand.

Eustace crept quietly up to the deck. He didn't want to disturb anyone, and he was very careful to keep away from the ship's water and supplies, because now, his intent really was just to get a bit of fresh air. He walked as carefully as he could, grimacing at every little creak, but the tiny noises he made hardly mattered, lost in the sound of the sea and the wind and the ship creaking.

When he got to the side of the ship, he leant against it, looking over the side, but he only looked at the water for a moment before he had to turn around and put his back against the side. However well he was getting on, looking at the waves tossing up and down and slapping against the side of the ship still made him feel very, very sick.

He wanted to go home. He thought longingly of his bedroom, with it's comfortable bed and the floor that didn't slope or pitch around, for the square, normal windows, and a view out onto a plain, boring street. At the same time, he never wanted to leave the cabin, with the comfortable sounds of Edmund's soft snoring and Caspian's deep, slow breathing.

Eustace liked being on the Dawn Treader more than he would admit. He enjoyed the company - even Reepicheep's, by now, of course. He liked being around Edmund more than he would have ever thought possible, because here Edmund had real power and authority and he looked as if he did. There was something about that which drew Eustace to people. And Caspian...

"Couldn't sleep?"

Eustace's eyes snapped open and for a moment he felt vaguely panicky before remembering that he really wasn't doing anything wrong, and it wasn't Reepicheep coming to beat him with the flat of his blade. It was only Caspian.

"I'm still not used to the ship," he said, shrugging slightly.

"Still feel sick every time you look down at the sea?" Caspian asked, lightly. He couldn't see Caspian's face very well because the lamp's position cast shadows all over his face, but he imagined the slight, teasing smile, and didn't resent it. He would have done, not so long before, but...

"Yeah. I feel like I'm going to fall in or something."

"I'd dive in and save you if you did," Caspian said, as if it was nothing, and moved, leaning against the side of the ship as well, his upper arm pressed warmly against Eustace's. "Do you still hate my ship?"

"No, it... she is beautiful," he said, awkwardly, but making an effort. He wanted to be liked, now, wanted Caspian to like him. And it was true, really, he did love the ship, even if he still did think of big ocean liners and their smooth movement a little longingly.

Caspian looked at him, and he looked up, and saw Caspian's eyes shining in the faint light, and a smile on Caspian's face, and he had to smile as well. This place, this country, and this moment filled him with longings he couldn't name, but he didn't move, letting it all wash over him, smiling the pleasant smile he had learned from Lucy over the past few weeks.

Then the moment was gone, and the king of Narnia reached up to ruffle his hair. "Don't stay up too late."

"I won't," he said, softly, and watched Caspian walk gracefully back into the ship. He didn't follow him just yet, waiting for him to settle down again and go to sleep. Then he would go below and fall asleep listening to Caspian's steady breathing.
