Summary: The only lie Much can tell without feeling guilty.
Robin smells of fresh bandages and ointment. The sheets are rough, not new, but the best they have to offer -- or so they say. Much has to bite his tongue to stop himself asking them to treat Robin more as Much knows he deserves. Like a king. This, he assures himself, is the very best they can do, and their subservience even to him is habit, not mockery.
Much slips into bed behind Robin, curling around the curve of his back and wrapping one arm around him, fitting against him as best he can. Robin is fever-hot still, his life a candle burning bright and quick, burning away, giving itself to light and heat and asking nothing but joy and thanks in return. Robin murmurs her name in his sleep again, like so many times before, and Much's heart sinks just the same as always.
"You'll be in Locksley again soon enough," he promises his feverish master, and though the thought cuts at his heart he feels better for being able to say it. "Ssh. It's okay."
It isn't okay. But Much is good at pretending it is, when he needs to -- the only lie he can tell without a heavy heart.
