fated_children.
Rinoa slipped into the office quietly, smiling at the sight of Squall with his head down on his papers and an exhausted look on his face. She contemplated leaving him like that, but then shook her head, moving around the desk and lightly placing her hand on his shoulder. Once upon a time, she would've shaken him awake, or tried to, but she'd come to know him better than that. He'd probably been awake since she entered the room.
He looked up at her, his cheek slightly red from sleeping like that, with a bit of ink rubbed off on it, too. His eyes were soft and loving and it made Rinoa giggle just a little, because he looked cute and though she'd seen the potential for that long ago, she'd never really thought she could be the one to bring it out. "Hey."
"Hey," he replied, sitting up properly and leaning back in his seat. She grabbed a chair and hauled it over next to his, dropping a small package and a letter on top of all the letters and assorted stationery on his desk.
"Quistis wrote," she said, by way of explanation. She saw him almost grimace at the idea of reading Quistis' letter -- small and painstakingly neat, from a lifetime of making detailed SeeD reports. She had to smile. "I'll tell you what she said."
He settled back a little, looking slightly more relaxed. She stole a kiss and then sat back, gesturing at the small package.
"She's well. Enjoying Esthar Garden -- I think she likes all the new technology. She misses us. And she asked me to buy you that before I showed you the letter, if I wanted to be sweet to you, something about memories and childhood."
Squall bit his lip and reached for it. The paper bag tore easily so he handled it carefully, smiling as he drew out one of the pink sweets with its powdery coating. "Bon bons. Strawberry bon bons."
Rinoa smiled, reaching to steal one and carefully licking off the pink powder, getting it all over her fingers and lips and not caring. "Why did she want me to buy you those, then?"
"When we were in the Orphanage..." Squall hesitated, giving Rinoa a careful look. At one point, she had confessed to him that she felt horribly threatened by the strong bonds of the past he had with everyone but her. She nodded encouragingly and he carried on. "That's what I'd buy, whenever I had some allowance. I never liked them that much, but she and Elle did. That's why..."
"How sweet," Rinoa said, only teasing a little. She smiled again and leaned in to kiss him softly, reluctant to leave, but knowing she should. "Enjoy your sweets. I'll see you later."
Squall looked about to say something, but then he stopped himself. He took a bon bon and smiled at her as he turned back to his work. She watched him for a moment and then slipped out, closing the door behind her.
