Squall hears the other's footsteps, even if he can't see him, even if he can't quite remember his face. The name is on the tip of his tongue, just about to slip away, just as the man is in the corner of his eyes, always just out of sight. He captures the name, says it into the soundless void, and somehow, forces himself to say it aloud, as if that would call the man to him. "Seifer."
"Keep walking, Squall," Seifer says, in a soft, hoarse voice. Hoarse from not having anything to drink, hoarse from the fighting and shouting and the pain, hoarse from breaking free of the sorceress' control. "I'm here."
"I can't see you."
"You don't have to. Keep walking."
Squall walks. And stumbles. And nearly falls. But he can't fall, not with Seifer there to see. They don't fall. They keep standing, no matter what. He keeps walking into endlessness, into the dry land, through time compression, and listens to the footsteps coming behind. And then they stop. He carries on for a few steps, and then turns, half expecting to see Seifer there. But there's nothing.
"Seifer?"
"Keep walking," Seifer says, one more time. And then nothing.
