It's a long way back to Tashbaan, Aravis thinks. She doesn't often want to go back. Just when she's annoyed with Cor or when something goes wrong that she can blame the barbarian country for. Cold beds. Broken windows. Late dinner. After a long day, things like that are enough. After a long day and an argument with Cor, things like that are more than enough.
"Aravis?"
"Go away," she says, coolly.
"Won't," Cor says, just as coolly, but he comes to stand beside her and puts his arm around her all the same. Stay, the touch says. Her tiny surrender -- a slight relaxation into him, a tiny smile, a shake of her head -- says that she will. That she could never leave now.
