FFVIII: The Future

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Squall/Rinoa
Warnings: Angst
Rating: G
Summary: Squall asks Ellone for advice. For [livejournal.com profile] philosophy_20.

"How do I know she isn't going to hurt me?"

Ellone raises her eyes to look into his. She saw him, just a moment ago, with Rinoa on the dancefloor, his face alive with reliving the first moments of their meeting. She knew he'd be coming over to her, with that sense a sister never loses, and so she'd stayed where she was as if transfixed. His hand is cool in hers when she takes it: cool with the guardian force that still sleeps within his mind.

"You don't know," she says, gently. "You just trust."

He shakes his head in frustration, his hair falling into his eyes. She smiles and reaches up to brush away his bangs, a simple gesture that sends her spinning years back to a little boy who hid his face against her shoulder to cry.

"You just have faith," she says, and runs her fingers through his hair one more time for good measure before she lets her hand fall away. "You just try to believe that she loves you, that she'll never leave you, or that if she does, it'll be for the best."

"Can you see the future, Elle?"

"No," she says, and for a moment she so much wants to, an aching inside her at the lost look on his face. She wants to be able to show him a way -- walk it before him. But she doesn't really want to see the future, and knows enough from looking to the past for advice about the future to know that nothing will make him believe but his own fierce determination. "Nobody can."

"Can you guess for me?"

Ellone looks across at Rinoa, who is already dancing with Irvine, her feet and heart light. She guesses at trouble ahead, but she doesn't say it -- just shakes her head. "I'm sorry."
