Summary: A last fight before Sora goes on to finish things. For [livejournal.com profile] key_blade.

The boy stands in front of him, all cocky confidence gained from things going his way. It makes him smile, because it is not the arrogance that causes a fall, but the kind of surety that comes from serving what's good without ever needing to consider it one way or the other. It's a confidence he's never had, not till now, looking at that bright and horribly young face. No, this is not something he can forget.

The way he was beaten when he first met this boy doesn't matter now, except as a footnote in passing. He's stronger now, and Sora is stronger still. As Donald and Goofy turn to leave, Sora's eyes remain on his. "Leon?"

"Go on."

"You're worried about us."

Sora sounds almost annoyed about that, as if nobody has any right to worry about him. And he's wrong, relentlessly so, because Leon knows. If anyone can do it, this little kid can with that keyblade in his hand.

"No," he says, "I'm not. But you could reassure me a bit more."

Ah, now. The kid knows now the exhilaration of a good fight, if he didn't already. He looks up at Leon, sizing him up, looking for the limits of his new training and then he laughs, shrugs his shoulders. "Sure. Why not?"

Aerith and Yuffie come out to watch, both amused at the almost boyish challenge in Leon's eyes. Aerith won't say it, but she's glad -- glad to see Leon with a smile on his face, glad to see him pushing himself that bit more than he has in a long time. He won't win: they all know that. But seeing Sora beat him -- that might give them all something. Reassurance, for a start, and in Leon's case, a drive to do more.

Both of them enjoy it. The push of it, the surge of adrenaline and the lightness it brings, whirling dance steps woven into the sword dance as greater experience fights purer power.

"You're slowing down, Leon," Yuffie calls to him, grinning. "Getting old!"

Keyblade and gunblade clash one more time and then they both step apart -- Sora grinning, and Leon the closest he's ever been to grinning.

"Good luck," Leon says to Sora.

"You too," Sora says, and turns to go with Donald and Goofy -- waving a hand nonchalently as if he's doing no more than going out on a picnic. Leon watches him go, gunblade still in hand.

"He'll do it," he says, to no one in particular.
