Summary: Things are different now. For [livejournal.com profile] philosophy_20.

It's not the same when she dreams with Squall. She feels him, deeper and colder: how changed he is in this long lifetime of forgetting. Laguna is the same warmth he always was, but Squall is different: distinct. She feels him with her, apart and alone, not letting her gentler thoughts temper his. And not just when they dream a shared dream of the past. Now, as she claims a dance with her 'brother', his touch is reluctant, his body stiff and the dance awkward, though they don't put a foot wrong that she can see.

"Why are you so awkward?" she asks, knowing he will understand -- knowing, somehow, that this is his doing. Time does change, but not as much as people think it does. And it is obvious to her, so used to looking through time, that he has not changed so much.

"Awkward?" he asks, blocking. Always blocking, always mirroring. The tempo of the dance increases and they move together -- against the current, as it feels to her, her eyes on his face.

"We used to be inseparable," she reminds him, knowing he doesn't need to be reminded. He remembers well enough: the way they went hand in hand. No Guardian Force could rip the memory of their closeness from his head -- not forever.

He replies so softly she barely catches it, "That's what I'm afraid of."
