Simon doesn't know it, but he's always there. Always somewhere at the edge of her senses. He says he wishes he could be there for her more, and that always makes her want to giggle -- but she keeps it back for his sake, because he is being so wonderfully noble, so heartachingly kind. How it is that he always knows the right thing to say when it comes to her, but can't manage to be consistently kind to Kaylee, River can't really understand.
Whenever the terror comes rushing up to choke her, there's always that whisper of him that remains. Often not enough to keep her from screaming, never enough to stop her shivering, shaking with it. But enough to let her know he's there. Loving her. Wanting her to be better.
"You're such a boob," she whispers to him, as she has before, when he comes to get her from her corner in the engine room, where she sat to feel Kaylee's particular brand of caring. He ignored Kaylee, when he was looking for her, and now Kaylee will be hurt.
But she can't help but feel a little pang of pride that Simon thinks her worthy of so much love.
