"Nobody would want to kill me, really, I'm too nice."
Squall laughs at the naïve statement, recognising it as mostly a joke, though not quite. He doesn't correct Laguna, anyway: for once a little relaxed, though soon enough he'll have plenty of cause for tension. It is, after all, the biggest conference Squall has so far arranged the security for, and plenty more people than Laguna will be at risk. So, for once, he snatches the moment of calm.
"I hope so. It'd certainly make my job easier if that was the case."
Laguna eyes Squall for a moment, noting the tired expression. Squall meets his eyes, raising an eyebrow curiously, and he forgets what he's thinking -- giving Squall the warmest smile in his repertoire in hopes of winning him over.
"I hope this meeting goes off well."
"I hope so, too," Squall says, softly. It's his first indication of any personal interest in it, and Laguna gives him a sidelong look.
"Interested?"
"It's a matter of world peace: of course I am. I don't want to fight another war."
Laguna watches him for a minute, trying to find the words. It's hard: after all, he knew where Squall was, but something always stopped him from going to get him. He could have sheltered him, to some extent. He could've... saved him all the pain, all the long hard training. "I'm sorry."
"About what?"
"I'm sorry that I... was such a rubbish father, I guess. I wish I could've been there for -- "
"I don't mind. I don't think about it."
Laguna opens his mouth to reply, but Squall is looking away, his expression as icy as ever. With an inward sigh, Laguna settles down to wait.
