"Is there anything from Beatrix?"
Garnet looked sympathetic, shaking her head slightly. She was smoothing her hair down, and Steiner realised that in his rush he'd forgotten to knock on the door first. He flushed at the thought of how he could've walked in on the young queen actually naked, but she cut him off as he started his apology. "It's alright, Steiner. I understand you miss her. I'm sure she'll write something for you soon, she's very busy."
"Thank you, your majesty, I -- "
"Steiner," her voice stressed slightly on his name. She'd worked out how to scold him without saying a word by then, and he hung his head a little -- already thoroughly chastened. She laughed. "Just remember, I don't expect such formality from you or Beatrix, not in private, anyway."
He nodded slightly and then, more cautiously: "Do you know when she'll be back?"
"Soon, I hope," she said, softly. She smiled -- sympathetic again. "I miss her too."
Steiner left his queen's rooms with a distinct feeling that the young, imperious girl he knew once was completely gone. It was a good change, and yet... And yet he still missed knowing exactly where he stood.
