Cuddled up against Simon, his skin warmer than she imagined it would be, and his breathing still rushed, Kaylee thinks about home. She thinks about her first time, how different it was to this, and way light came down through the leaves of trees to make patterns on their skin. She and Simon are inside Serenity, safe from the black only by the grace of god and the integrity of Serenity's outer panelling.
She could be thinking of this with regret, and wishing herself back there. But if she'd stayed there, she'd never have met Simon -- or Serenity.
