FFVIII: Contrast

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Squall
Warnings: Quistis POV
Rating: PG
Summary: They've always contrasted perfectly.

Squall and Seifer have always contrasted each other perfectly. Fire and ice, heat and cold, temper and calm. Both with their unique sense of honour and pride, the one never backing down, the other refusing to admit there is a reason for conflict. As children, it was the same - Squall was the perfect boy, and Seifer, for his part, was the wild child. And yet, every single one of Seifer's pranks was aimed at getting Squall's attention and keeping it.

They've continued in that vein, even to now. Light-haired and dark-haired, wrong and right, passion and coolness, even their scars - mirrored images reflecting only the other.

Squall and Seifer are an attraction of opposites, a ruthless chemical attraction written in every line of them, done to every little locus of every little strand of DNA. They'd be fools to deny it and I don't truly think they want to. I may have wanted Squall for my own once but I knew even then that what Squall needs is embodied in Seifer - and vice versa.

Even when I thought I wanted Squall, I still tried to make them get along. Because I could see everything they couldn't. That they only fought because they were fighting the idea that maybe, maybe they needed each other.

It's a shame for now that hate and wounds stand between them. But between the contrasts and the similarities, between the fire and the ice, there's a middle way for them to find still.
