Paine is a challenge; perhaps the first he's ever had, and so worth winning simply for that. Because she resists him at first: meets his warmth with coolness and his smiles with shrugs. He is far from home and lonely and still somewhat sick at heart from hurting Rikku, and she is as far from home as he is.
They both agree that it's a one time thing before anything happens. It's a cold night when things do happen, and so they sleep tangled together, but that's all. No feelings of love, no feelings of guilt -- no feelings at all.
