For the first part of my life, I followed only other people's expectations. For the rest, I followed my heart, and that has always led me to one person only. Standing on the boat I could no more abandon Derfel than I could have left him at any other time: so I got down, and took his hand. I was ready. I was ready to live, or die, I was ready to see him die. But I wasn't ready to leave him alone to cross the bridge of swords alone. If he died, I would be one step ahead on the bridge: the star of Powys, a bright enough omen, I would hope, for him to follow.
It would have been a good way to end. If we had had the choice to leave with Arthur, both of us, and become legends -- I would have urged him to take it. We would have gone, with idealistic Arthur and discontent Guinevere, with sweet, sweet Galahad. But I stepped off the enchantment and into the real world, and I still have yet to truly regret it.
He lies beside me now, as he has for so long; peacefully, now, and no war to take him away. Only a priest to rant and rave and make accusations, and that we can handle. After everything, we can handle one ranting priest. Even if the priest is Sansum.
Derfel still snores, as he always has. That is somehow reassuring. Legends can begin all around us, and still he snores.
If this is the ending to our story, and we leave it here -- I, for one, am content.
