Cecil fears judgement. Above all else, he fears that -- not the judgement of people around him, not even the judgement of the king, but some higher judgement called down on him for what he is, what he's become. A Dark Knight, no matter whether the status and job description appeal. That's what he is: and surely he would be found lacking just for that in itself? He doesn't want to face the end with that in mind, and every battle he gets a little more careful, a little more broken, imagining the end and the eternal damnation waiting beyond.
