It no longer seems odd to him that he doesn't remember his mother. Nobody else in Tantalus seems to have much family to speak of, except what they've found and made in Tantalus itself, and that counts for more because they chose each other.
Before he joined Tantalus, his ideas of family were too idealistic. Or at least he had no idea they'd be so infuriating at the same time as so wonderful, that they could be so kind and so oddly selfish, sometimes right at the same time.
He had no idea he could put up with that kind of thing.
