"He's in love with Kain."
Rydia's voice is a little sulky -- hurt -- and Rosa can tell why. She knows how Rydia feels about her as surely as she knows how Cecil feels about Kain, and she makes sure not to let a significant glance linger between her and the younger girl. She nods slightly, though, in acknowledgement, carefully threading a needle. She likes to sew, still -- a simple task for a queen, but one that reminds her of her roots. "I know," she says, at last, to Rydia's disbelieving silence.
"Why don't you stop it, then?"
Rosa's patience wins out and she threads the needle properly, and now she starts to sew -- always a little clumsy when it comes to small stitches, but otherwise neat enough. "Because that would be stupid. I'd lose him."
"He must be with you for a reason -- "
"He loves me, too."
Rydia tries to understand. For a moment, anyway, she stays silent. Then she cleans her throat, moving closer to Rosa. "But... why does he go off with Kain like he does, then? Why can't he just be happy with you?"
"He's happy enough with me."
The thoughts don't bring tears to Rosa's eyes as they once did, and she's glad for that. It means she's accepted, in a way, the sure and simple fact that Cecil is not completely hers. It means that she is content enough with her lot and that Cecil will never have a reason to leave her. Rydia frowns a little.
"I don't understand."
Rosa keeps her eyes on her sewing. Now, the tears come, blurring the sight. Rydia's hand touches her shoulder, awkwardly, an unlikely comfort. She doesn't understand, either. She doesn't understand where she went wrong, what she didn't do well enough. She just wants Cecil to love her -- just a little.
