Summary: Snatching life from the jaws of fate.
Galahad lay silent at my side, that night. In the morning, we would form the shield wall, and stand shoulder to shoulder again. In the morning, we would risk all to gain a few meters of land, and we would do it again the next day, and as long as Galahad stood beside me I didn't care. In the madness of battle I felt joy, yes, but in Galahad's company there was a greater joy. That autumn was harsh, and the death toll harsher, but I didn't despair. Couldn't despair. I had Galahad at my side.
Winter came, and nipped at our heels, harrying us to turn tail and run for home. Of the two sides, it was simply a matter of who broke first, whose shield wall ended in a rout first. We stood firm even when the wind slid through every chink of our armour and made us shiver, and at night, I slept with my arm around Galahad, and his arm around me.
We snatched our lives from the jaws of fate again and again, that autumn. Galahad defended me, and I him, and the shield wall where we stood shoulder to shoulder would not, could not possibly, break.
