FFX-2: His Desert

Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2

Summary: Gippal meets Yuna when she's out digging. For [livejournal.com profile] 30_fantasies.

Gippal is just wandering, really, wandering and thinking, anyway, when he sees her. Yuna, that is. She's alone for once, kneeling down to dig through the loose sand, her skin a little pink from the harsh sun already, a determined look on her face. Somehow, she looks prettier like that -- more substantial. Less of a big name with a pretty face and more of an ordinary girl who gets where she's going.

"Hey," he says, quietly, when he reaches her, trying not to startle. Before she even answers he adds his hands to the equation, helping her hold back sand while she scoops it out of the hole. He can see what she's done wrong and he helps to correct it, helping her lift the bit of warm metal out, hefting in his hands. "Hey, you found a good bit!"

She smiles a little, then, brushing her hair out of her face and getting up. "Were you looking for me?"

Gippal gets up as well, stretching a little and shaking his head. "Nah. No offence but you're not the only thing in this desert worth seeing."

"I didn't mean that!"

She's even blushing. He laughs a little, easily, running his fingers through his hair and glancing up at the sun to get an idea of the time before looking back at her. "Geez, Yuna, you're such an easy mark. I was here just to walk around, actually."

Self-consciously, she brushes the sand from her knees, smiling a little shyly. "Oh. Do you like walking in the desert, then? I always find it too hot. And, well, sandy. The sand gets everywhere."

"Well, there's that. I think I've got sand behind my eyepatch, but I'm pretty much used to all of that. Besides. If so few people walk in my desert, it makes it an even better place for me to walk and just think."

"I came here to think, more than to dig, really," she admits, smiling again and glancing at the machina part in his hands. "Can I have that back? I think that's the bit Nhadala wanted."

"Oh, right. Here," he hands it over easily, laughing as she gasps at the unexpected weight. "Yeah, watch that. They're always heavier than they look. People used to really built machina to last -- not like the flimsy crap the Al Bhed have been turning out for so long now. Hoping to change that, of course."

"I know."

There's a moment of silence and then she shifts uncomfortably. "I should... go. Leave you to your thoughts."

He shrugs, grinning again and making the offer easily, without embarrassment or bashfulness. "It's up to you. If you need a bit of company, I can keep quiet for a while and we can do some more digging together. We'd make quite the team."

"I think Rikku would get jealous," Yuna says, earnestly, and then blushes, putting her hand over her mouth. "Oh my, I shouldn't have said that!"

He laughs again. "I know anyway. That kid..."

"She's a good person," Yuna says, firmly, and Gippal nods.

"Oh, yeah, not disputing that. Just... we don't go together. Say hi to her for me, though, when you see her."

"I will. Um. Thank you, I guess, for helping me dig this up."

Yevonites always stand on ceremony so, as if they don't know how to just leave and let things go. Gippal rolls his eye a little at the realisation that she's too awkward, too polite, to just leave. He turns to go, waving at her as he heads off in a different direction. "Well, I'll be going. Have fun."

"Thank you!" she calls again, and he just raises his hand again in recognition, walking back out in the loneliness of his desert.
