Summary: A knight looking for a sorceress and a sorceress bereft of her knight. For
fated_children.
"I heard what happened to Squall."
Rinoa's eyes flicker with magic and Seifer fights the urge to step back, swallowing hard and trying to meet her eyes, all golden with the power inside her. It's unsettling, how damned much she looks like Ultimecia when the power is threatening to rip out of her. He holds still and wills her to realise that he's not a threat, wills her to realise who he is.
"Rinoa?"
"Seifer? Is that you?"
He takes a step closer to her and catches her as the fit of power recedes, leaving her weak. She's horribly skinny, skinnier even than he remembers from that summer, when she was still all lanky and girlish. Now she's all woman -- and more than half wasted away, her skin ivory-pale. "Yeah, it's me."
"I was waiting for you."
He frowns. "Nobody knew I was coming."
"You did. I did."
"Sorceress powers, huh?"
She nods slightly and pulls him over to the bed to sit down -- supposedly leaning on him, but really making sure he comes with her and stays despite the flicker of power that even now he can taste on the back of his tongue. "I was waiting for you to come because I need a knight."
"No!"
Rinoa lowers her eyes at that, waiting for Seifer to calm down, still leaning on him and carefully steering them both to the bed and making him sit down. When he takes a deep breath she jumps in first. "Seifer, I need your help. I knew you would come -- you couldn't stay away from a chance. I won't need you forever. Just until... just until I can move on from him."
"So I'm second best?"
"No! Not like that. Seifer, I just... We're both lost right now; you need a sorceress, and I need a knight. I don't know if it'll work in the long term, but..."
He surprises her by reaching up to cup her cheek, resting their foreheads together. "And what if Ultimecia wants me again?"
"She's gone, Seifer. And, anyway," there's a flicker in Rinoa's eyes that's nearer to sanity and humanity than she has felt in the days, weeks, months, since Squall died for her, "finder's keepers."
