Summary: An ancient machina lands Gippal in a completely different world. For multi-chapter fics, pairings and warnings are chapter specific.
By the time Gippal actually finds some of the parts for the machina he needs to make, Edge has almost managed to convince himself that they don't exist. It's kind of bittersweet to sit on their bed and watch Gippal sitting on the floor puzzling with bits of metal and wire. Bitter, because he almost had Gippal for his own, forever, to stay in his world. Sweet, because of the smile on Gippal's face as he finally gets to work, and because he knows that he and Gippal --
That he and Gippal have fallen in love anyway. Despite the fact that Gippal is going home. It's sweet in a way that Edge would have laughed at himself for just months before, a sharp edged sweetness that sticks in the throat.
"Hey."
Edge looks up suddenly to see Gippal looking at him, the pieces of machina tumbled from his hands. He smiles, or tries to, and then finds himself slipping down to sit next to Gippal, oddly glad when Gippal wraps an arm around him, pulling him closer.
"Kinda hard to do this when all I can think about is you."
Gippal sounds a little huffy, and a little teasing, and a little bit of everything except really annoyed, and Edge laughs, leaning against him. "Need some help? I don't know that much, but you could teach me as we go along."
"To be honest, I'd rather a break from this."
"A break?"
"Yeah. See more of your world before..."
Edge silences him quickly, with a finger over his lips and then a kiss, surprising himself with his own daring and smiling at the look on Gippal's face. He kisses him again, deeper, and then pulls back. "Would you like to meet some of my friends?"
The smile that tugs up the corners of Gippal's lips is more sincere that his other smiles of the past few days. "Yes."
-----
Gippal is a flirt.
That wouldn't be a problem if Gippal stuck to flirting with him, but right now Gippal is flirting with Rydia and she's responding to him better than she ever did to Edge, smiling and relaxing and natural. Edge would've been bothered that someone was stealing Rydia away, but right now he's more bothered that Gippal is more interested in Rydia than in him. But he can't turn away and walk off and leave him to it, because he wants to make sure it's nothing more than flirting on either side.
He never figured himself as a jealous type, but apparently he is.
"So how long have you been here?" Rydia asks Gippal, tilting her head just a little in question, and he shrugs slightly.
"Not long enough," Edge mutters, just loud enough for Gippal to hear, and the Al Bhed smiles.
"It's good you made friends here, just in case..."
"I think I can go back," Gippal says, flatly, before she says exactly why friends here are good. "I've found the parts of the machina, I think, and now I just have to put them together."
Rydia nods slightly, an apology in her eyes. "It's interesting that a -- what did you call it? A machina? It's interesting that a machina in your world would bring you here. I don't remember many stories about people from another world, but there are some."
"I think at one time it must have been more common. So common, maybe, that nobody bothered to write things down. Besides, there was a lot of censorship in my world, at one point. The records might've been destroyed."
"Will you visit again, if you go home?"
"I don't know," Gippal says, softly, and his one eye finds Edge's two. "I want to. There are things about this world... that I'll miss when I go home."
Rydia smiles. "I'm sure Edge would be happy to see you again."
"I'm sure," the Al Bhed agrees, grinning again with knowing. He moves a little closer to Edge, his fingers making the barest brush over Edge's wrist, a little caress that says I'm not gone yet or maybe just a reassurance that the flirting is meaningless. "I'll miss him when I get home."
"That's sweet," she says, and then cocks her head slightly, "Have you met Cecil and Rosa yet?"
"I was planning on taking him to see them next," Edge shrugs. She almost jumps at the sound of his voice, as if she'd forgotten he was there -- and she couldn't really be blamed for that, after all. Edge normally made sure everyone knew he was there when he was. "Is Kain back from Mount Ordeals yet?"
"I don't know, I haven't heard from them."
"It'd be good to see him, if we could."
-----
"I like your friends," Gippal says, softly, against the back of his neck. He kisses softly and Edge presses back closer to him, his back to Gippal's chest, one of Gippal's arms around him and their fingers entertwined, close enough to be comforting and a little too close, the kind of almost-uncomfortable that you live with because you don't want to move away from the comfort of it.
"I could tell," he says, a little drily, and Gippal laughs, kissing the back of his neck again and nipping lightly.
"Especially the girl. Rydia. She's bright. Feisty."
"Feisty is the word for it," Edge huffs softly.
Gippal dares to laugh again, moving his kisses across Edge's shoulder in a nicely distracting manner. "I guess you'll be dragging me away from here quickly just in case I charm her into bed just like I did you?"
"You didn't charm me anywhere."
His arm tightens a little. "I like to look on it as a mutual charming, if that helps."
"Hm. As long as you're not underestimating me."
"No."
Edge snuggles back closer to Gippal, his eyes open even in the darkness. "I used to think I was in love with Rydia. Used to bother her all the time, asking her to go out on a date with me, you know, all that... Barely even seen her since you came."
There's a pause. "Yeah?"
"I didn't love her. I..."
Gippal's voice is full of his grin. "Don't bother saying it. I know. You too, Edge."
