It's a cold evening. Celes goes out to ask Terra if she's too cold standing out there, but then she stops. Because Terra looks like she wants to be alone, and she also looks so fragile and strong all at once that Celes isn't all that sure whether she even feels the cold. So she stops, but she doesn't go straight back inside. Instead, she watches Terra, and thinks of running her fingers through Terra's hair and holding her and trying to take that hopelessly hopeful expression from her face.
Celes hasn't really had feelings like this before, but somehow she isn't surprised that she has them about Terra. It seems, somehow, fitting, in a way that Celes doesn't want to demean with explanations. It's just right.
And it's just right to cross through the cold night and put her hand on Terra's warm shoulder, standing there behind her and just letting her stand, sharing that standing. Terra doesn't even look at her, but she can see the smile spread and finally Terra turns, just a little, including her.
"Are you scared?"
"Yes." Celes lives and breathes fear. She's never been without it. But that just means she can ignore it, push it away, pretend it's not there. There's always been something to fear and feeling and not feeling that fear has kept Celes alive so long and so well. "But I don't let it rule me."
"I wish I knew how to do that."
"Just... let it be. It's there, so listen to it. It's there to help you, or what would be the point? Trust your instincts..."
"You're always so sure."
Celes shares Terra's smile. "Not always."
