FFVI: Cause

Fandom: Final Fantasy VI
Pairing: Celes/Terra
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Celes is the kind of person who always needs a cause. For [livejournal.com profile] esper_cave.

Celes is the kind of woman who always needs to be loyal to something -- cause or person or abstract idea. When Kefka is gone, she has precious little of that. When Terra flies ahead of them, bright but fading, the most important thought she's loyal to is their safety, Locke's and Edgar's and Sabin's and Setzer's, but mostly Terra's, because Terra risks for them -- for her. Not just for her, but it almost feels like that to Celes, watching her, heart in her throat and adrenaline still making her feel bright, quick, in control.

It's harder to think of anything to attach herself to when they're all safe -- safe! Somehow, she never thought they could be safe. Safe enough that now they're each telling Setzer where they want to go -- Sabin and Edgar first, to Figaro, and they stop for a while to see them safely settled down.

Setzer asks her, quietly, if she wants to fly with him, and she considers it. She imagines living on that quick, quick airship, living in the sky, and knows it's not for her. She tells him no and he nods, as if he wasn't expecting her to say yes.

Locke asks her to go with him, too. Exploring the earth as surely as Setzer does the sky. She could be happy doing that, perhaps. She could be happy with Locke. But --

If there's a but, there's a doubt, and so, almost regretfully, she tells Locke she can't stay with him. He seems to understand too, and she's grateful for that, and that he doesn't pry too much. He's a good friend, truly, and she smiles at him and waves when he leaves.

Strago and Relm go, too, and Relm asks her to stay -- just for a while, just long enough for her to draw a proper portrait of her, with charcoal or paints or something, but she refuses and Relm shakes her head and says she didn't think she'd stay, anyway.

Terra wants to go back to Mobliz, and Celes is almost jealous of the friends she has to go back to -- the children, the cause. Terra is the only one who doesn't offer her a home, doesn't offer her a comfortable place to stay or a life of excitement.

Maybe that's why Celes leaves Setzer's airship with her.
