"I missed you."
Edgar looks a little surprised when Sabin speaks, and looks even more surprised when he realises the others have been walking faster and are now a little ahead, leaving them alone together. His smile, though, is exactly as Sabin remembers it, easy and kind as well as teasing. "I missed you too. It's good to see you again."
"I thought about you a lot."
A lot is an understatement, and Sabin knows it, and Edgar knows it once he catches Sabin's eye and sees it all there, like he always could, reading him like a book. Sabin walks a little closer to Edgar, letting their arms touch, and Edgar doesn't move away, even though he retreats back into thought. Sabin nudges him after a minute. "I always knew you'd make the best king."
"I -- "
"You knew, too, that's why..."
"Why I allowed the chance of you going? Yes, but I didn't want -- I didn't want you to go, not really. You..."
"You've been lonely," Sabin says, not a question, but a statement of fact, because it Edgar can read him like a book he can read him just as well, if not better. He stops for a moment and puts a strong hand on Edgar's arm, stopping him walking. "You're not alone now."
Edgar glances to the others, ahead of them. "No," he agrees, softly, even though he knows Sabin didn't mean them.
A moment later they break apart and hurry up to join the others again, and Edgar's lips tingle with the force of Sabin's sudden kiss, and his heart is thumping inside him like a drum. No, he's -- they're -- not alone anymore.
And they're not kids anymore.
