FFX-2: Wait and See

Fandom: Final Fantasy X-2
Pairing: Gippal/Baralai
Warnings: None
Rating: PG
Summary: Gippal's seen Baralai once before. For [livejournal.com profile] _overthefantasy.

He's seen Baralai before.

That's the first thought to run through Gippal's head when he sees the young man waiting there with the young woman who will be their recorder, the young man in robes with an eager, inexperienced, almost excited about the whole thing, but too good, too Yevon for that. He's seen him before, not here, but a few years ago and in a different place.

He noticed him. That was odd, because there were crowds; it was Luca in the blitzball season after all. His eyes were drawn to the kid who was almost not a kid, growing up quickly and doing it with a hint of grace that spoke volumes about how he'd be in a fight. Gippal'd been younger, of course, but already pain and battle hardened, the patch already chafing over his ruined eye as it always would.

Baralai's stance and clothes had said a fighter who'd never fought, and judging from the look of him now, it's still almost the same. All training and no bite, but he seems strong enough to fight hard enough to learn enough to stay alive.

It's a lot of seeming, and a lot of enough, and only just of both.

Still, they're in the same group. And -- he smiles at the boy, shakes his hand warmly and is surprised by the boy's acceptance of him, his culture, and all the messy implications a group of Yevonites with an Al Bhed forced into it spells -- he'll protect the boy.

The thought surprises him, but, then, not that much.

Protecting comes natural to Gippal, even if it's usually followed by a bit of charm and an invitation into bed. And that wouldn't be such a bad idea, if the boy seemed to swing that way -- could be interesting, could be fun. Could be, judging by his reactions to the boy, to seeing him the first time and seeing him now -- standing there in the middle of the group he almost seems destined to join -- a bad idea, more trouble than it's worth.

Could be a good idea, of course, everything Gippal's been wanting and needing and missing with others.

He'll just have to see.
