FFVIII: Only In Dying Life

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Squall, Squall/Rinoa
Warnings: None
Rating: G
Summary: Giving up the fear of dying for the pure joy of being alive. Inspired by Ursula Le Guin's novel, "A Wizard of Earthsea".

The first time he stopped being afraid of dying it was like being set free, and he fought Seifer with a fierce horrible brightness that didn't care whether he lived, died or just existed, didn't care whether there was purpose or meaning, just moved with his instincts and skills and training, throwing everything he had into the fight and holding nothing back.

He beat Seifer for the first time, then, and Seifer smirked at him and told him he was learning. That's the lesson and the gift Seifer had to teach and give; a love of life and a love of living life, of being life and trusting to yourself not to fall or falter.

Without that knowledge, SeeDs died daily, but Seifer was so sure that when they were SeeDs, neither of them would die.

It might've been Rinoa that Squall loved, but he wasn't sure. Everything he did during the war -- every time he woke aching and sore, heartsick and lonely and tired of fighting -- and everytime he fought, it was Seifer he thought of and quick bright life in the clash and spark of a duel, outwardly calm and cool and feelingless, but inwardly burning -- with life, with uncertainty, with love.

Living life purely to live, not expecting or fearing death -- they both clung to that.
