Summary: He would've given anything.
She is gone. And he is dead.
He almost pushed down that thing. Almost killed everything in the universe because the things that meant so much to him, the things that he wanted to protect whether they wanted him to protect them or not, they were gone. He'd failed one and sent the other far away.
He'd have given anything, everything, to have her at his side right then. Her hand in his. Trembling, but sure.
He knew she'd be sure he could save her. He couldn't always save her. But as long as she had confidence in him, he thought that, maybe, he could do it. But she was gone. And Jack had just been... exterminated. Terminated. His life had ended.
Failing Rose, he'd've loved to have Jack beside him when they went down fighting.
He would push that thing down. End it all. The only thing that meant anything anymore was safe, safe in the past.
Even though Jack said it was okay, that the plan had to be carried through, the Doctor hesitated. He hesitated, gripped the thing harder, held his breath, bit the inside of his cheek. But somehow he felt that Rose would save him if she could. Would want him to save her. Without killing everyone.
He would be a coward, then.
He released the thing, straightened, and wished one last time that he had them beside him.
