Jack had, they found, an annoying habit of giving them petnames and then dropping them within a day, just when they'd got used to them and started to accept that he might call them that. It was annoying and endearing and when he was gone, when everything changed, they'd sit in silence and wish for him to be there, to break the sudden fragile tenseness between them with warmth and smiles. He's always been there to drag the Doctor out of his sulks and to tease Rose out of petulance, and sometimes they didn't know what to do without him.
