Summary: Kain has a great sense of timing. For [livejournal.com profile] mount_ordeals.

Coming back to Baron after so long, Kain sees everything like new, even everything that was once so painfully familiar that something in him was fighting to get out, fighting to leave. It's not the trap it used to feel -- it's a home -- somewhere to belong. One thing that has changed though is the king, and now Cecil sits on the throne and Kain wonders how it will be. Can he still serve?

He got to kind of like choosing things for himself, up on Mount Ordeals. Choosing when he would fight and when he would eat and sleep. Never following anyone's orders, not even his own body's if it was late and dark and he was tired but wanted to keep fighting.

Coming home is a little scary in that respect, but today the town is happy, and there are flowers in the hair of one playing kid and another is carrying a balloon bobbing on a string. He touches the shoulder of one kid, rests his hand on top of the kid's head and kneels down to ask, "What's going on today, small one?"

"The queen is havin' a baby, of course!"

That thought is a shock to the system, too, but he tousles the kid's hair and gives him some money for sweets before heading to the castle. He's always had a good sense of timing and today it comes in handy. He arrives in time to clap a nervous Cecil on the shoulder and reassure him and then congratulate him when someone comes to tell him it's a boy.

It's not hard, he suddenly finds. Like Baron accepts him back, the role of Cecil's friend and being just a little under him comes back like it's a mold created only for him. He smiles when Cecil and Rosa welcome him, and stares incredulously when they name the kid after him, and laughs with them when they laugh at his expression.

He feared coming home, but now he's already come to fear leaving again.
