Summary: Yuffie pesters Tifa and Aeris a little. For [livejournal.com profile] mako_reactor.

"Where did you grow up?"

They don't know each other well yet, for all that it's been nights in a tent just the three of them with the others all crammed into the other, slightly larger, tent. Yuffie's usually good at dodging questions and going straight to sleep, but tonight she's not sleeping and Aeris is playing with Tifa's hair, so she kinda wants to join in the whole girly thing. It's been a while since she was with anyone decent.

"Wutai."

"I don't know where that is," Aeris said, combing her fingers carefully through Tifa's bangs.

"It's on the western continent, right?"

Yuffie was almost surprised that Tifa knew. She wrapped her blankets more comfortably around her and wriggled a little, moving closer to the other two -- supposedly for warmth, but also for just knowing there was someone relatively nice relatively close. "Yup."

Tifa nodded slightly, tipping her head back a little and sitting still for Aeris to braid her hair. "I've heard it's nice there. You have different kinds of buildings and that big statue..."

"Some buildings are different. Pagodas. And the statue is called Da Chao." Yuffie paused for a minute, and then, realising that the information giving was terribly one sided, cleared her throat. "And where are you two from?"

"I was born in a snowy place, but mostly I remember Midgar."

"I think I'd hate Midgar."

Tifa looks down at her hands, slipping her gloves off as if she didn't realise she was still wearing them. "There are good people in Midgar. But there's also so many reactors, and so much corruption..."

Yuffie nodded. "And no sky. And no flowers."

Aeris' expression clouded a little and she focused on Tifa's hair, her hands quick and careful in their braiding. "Actually, there are flowers in Midgar. In my church. It's a little place... doesn't seem to go by the rules of the rest of Midgar."

"You miss it?" Yuffie asks, all innocent.

There are tears in Aeris' eyes.

"Yes. And I don't think I'll ever go back there... not like this, anyway."

"I was born in Nibelheim," Tifa says, quietly, sensing danger and steering away. Aeris finishes braiding her hair when she says it, and all three pull apart, laying down and snuggling into their blankets to get warm.

Yuffie would like to talk some more, but it's like the other two close themselves up and fold themselves in, leaving her out. She lays with her eyes open in her little corner of the tent and then, ever disobedient to unspoken rules and requests, she wriggles in between them.
