Summary: Helping people is just natural to him. For
madain_sari.
Protecting people is something that comes naturally to Zidane. Protecting them, helping them, sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong and getting all caught up in it, that's all one to Zidane and all just part of life. It helps if it's a pretty girl or a kid, but really, Zidane'll be there for whoever needs him without needing a reason or an explanation or even a request for help.
Heck, he'd probably help even if he was told not to.
Vivi, Zidane thinks, is a little enigma. He's weak and horribly strong, packed full of magic that seems powerful enough to burn him from the inside out. He's full of good intentions and yet he's not strong enough or brave enough to follow through. And at the same time he's brave enough to stand there and face his fears, and the only sign that he wants to run is the tight grip he has on that little staff of his.
Zidane would, of course, dearly love to help him. Sort him out. Show him the strength and the weakness and how to turn one into the other and why each one is useful and when. How being afraid is a good thing because it makes you careful.
At the same time, he's almost jealous of all that potential, all that power. He'd love to have magic -- love to have a spark like that. He can't understand why Vivi is afraid when all it takes is patience and training and then a moment's concentration to bring the magic bubbling up and flowing out, fire like water and water sudden and shocking as lightning, and lightning a slow and steady burn like fire.
Still, he has his instincts and he doesn't have to understand Vivi to help him. With encouraging smiles and words in the right places, Zidane is quite sure he can help Vivi out -- at least a little.
He smiles to himself.
It always makes him feel good about himself, anyway. Never say there aren't any reasons or rewards for helping people.
