They know when he's sulking. Of course they know -- and so do the rest of the crew. He locks himself in the infirmary and won't talk to anyone but River. And River sulks. There's simply no other word for it.
So there's nothing for it but to own up. Jayne tries to think of something he could give Simon, and Mal struggles with words and curses in Chinese at everything that moves to disturb his thinking.
In the end, Jayne mumbles an apology and Mal guiltily offers up some of his stock of rare personal treats.
Simon can't help but forgive them.
