Edge may be boastful and egocentric, but he's good at listening when someone -- usually a girl, of course -- really needs it. He'd use that to get close to Rydia, but she doesn't ever cry and she'd laugh in his face if he suggested she just talk to him. She'd assume he has ulterior motives for the offer.
Of course, he does, but at the same time he'd quite like to be someone Rydia could rely on. She's strong and smart and her magic flows out of her easily, and even Gramps might approve of her.
He'll get her somehow, eventually.
