Before he went wrong, Saruman was worthy of admiration. He was conscientious, he was strong, he was good, and he was clever. So clever that even Gandalf the Grey, wise and independant and caught up in the world's woes, looked up to him and admired him.
There'd been love there, too, once, once upon a very long time ago. Not now, not with Gandalf always so far away and Saruman so reluctant to travel.
But still, it called Gandalf back to Saruman, every once an age or so.
