FFVIII: Paradox

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Pairing: Seifer/Squall
Warnings: Alternate Universe, angst
Rating: PG
Summary: Seifer bit Squall because once upon a time Squall bit Seifer because Seifer bit him. Partial AU for [livejournal.com profile] au_abc, original idea from a timeline with [livejournal.com profile] candywrapper. Fits into canon if you don't poke it too hard.

Seifer has never been so angry. It's a cold and deep anger, one that goes right into him, because he's not human anymore. He's not human anymore and while he'd never let it be said that he has no emotions, his emotions are different. Longer lasting. He's alone now, so alone, the only one in the world and he's caught up in a cruel and strange time paradox, all meant to control him.

He doesn't intend on being controlled, but he's rather too fond of existence not to go along with the basics. Like this. He's going to catch Squall. He's going to catch Squall and steal him away from Garden and responsibilities and little toadies fawning over him. He's better than all that anyway. Much better.

He likes Squall, anyway. Likes him with an added age of predatory hunger. He knows it would be horribly sweet to have Squall. To hold him close and feel him struggle and know that, for once, Squall can't win. It would be so, so sweet to have Squall and hold him and take his blood and his life and leave him limp on the floor.

But Squall is still needed, sometime in the future, so he won't.

Not until that future comes, anyway.

Squall gets out of the car and he's the perfect target, all alone and vulnerable. Seifer couldn't've picked a better time really. And Squall couldn't have picked a worst place to be while Seifer was out looking for him. A deserted street in the middle of Deling on a quiet night. Not the smartest place to go missing. The cops around there rarely give a shit anyway.

Seifer has learnt how to walk very quietly. It comes with his heightened senses and his newfound strength and powers. It's the whole predator-instinct thing, and it has his nerves humming with anticipation. He can hear Squall's heartbeat -- slow and strong and steady and pumping all that delicious blood around his body at the perfect speed. Seifer can almost taste it already, how good it will feel in his mouth, gushing out from an artery.

"Got you, Squally-boy," he whispers, right into Squall's ear, one hand over his mouth, his chest pressed to Squall's back, the other arm easily wrapping round him and restraining. Perfect setting, perfect capture. He brushes his fangs lightly over Squall's neck, caressing the pulse-point.

"Seifer?"

There's a quaver in Squall's voice Seifer likes entirely too much. It's nice, when your prey shows a little fear. Even when you don't plan to kill them. He smiles a little and holds Squall closer.

"Nice of you to recognise me."

"Let me go."

"Why?"

Fear is almost tangible, Seifer thinks. He thought Squall would never be afraid but ahhh, there now, he knows better nowadays, doesn't he? Squall is afraid, Squall is even trembling a little in Seifer's arms. It's a very nice idea. Seifer nuzzles against Squall's neck, licks pale sweet skin.

"I'll fight you," Squall says, his heartbeat quickening, his body straightening up, tensing for a fight. Seifer just snorts and holds Squall tighter, showing exactly how immobolised he is. To give him credit, Squall's voice stays clear. No squeak of fear from the beautiful Commander. "What are you going to do to you?"

"Make you like me."

"Like you?"

"A vampire, Squally-boy," Seifer breathes, and for a moment he bites into Squall's neck and lets blood flow into his mouth, metallic and sweet and absolutely fucking perfect, just like he thought it'd be. He pulls back, licking his lips and sealing the cut with a casual lick. "Like you made me."

"I didn't make you into a vampire."

"No, but you will."

Squall's voice does shake a little now, but, as Seifer kindly allows, only in frustration. He struggles a little, pushing back against Seifer, and for a moment Seifer can only think of how much he wants him. "I don't understand."

"Nor do I, not really, have no idea how it's all possible... but time paradox theory is a bitch and I don't care. I just want to live. And if I don't make you into a vampire right now, who knows what fucked up things it'll do to the timeline?"

"Seifer..."

"I need to do it, Squally-boy."

He feels Squall stop fighting. He lets Squall turn to face him, looks down into Squall's eyes and sees only understanding and consent. Squall tips his head to the side, suddenly acquiesent, and hey, he doesn't really understand it, not any of it, but he'll take surrender. "So do it then, Almasy."

"Hold onto me," he warns, and he holds Squall tightly when he bites.

-----

Seifer is ageless and in love and nobody's boytoy, no sorceress' knight, he's a vampire and he's free and happy thank you very much. Squall is ageless and just as in love and right now he's staring into the eyes of his greatest enemy, the sorceress who caused all of it, the sorceress he's been waiting to meet again for years and years and years.

"I'm not doing anything for you."

"Oh?"

She smirks. She leans forward, motioning at Seifer. Her smile is cruel. Twisted. Hungry. She feeds the paradox, her cruel need to punish her knight just a part of it. "Do you really want to lose him? If you don't turn him into a vampire in the past, at this very moment, he ceases to exist."

"And so do I."

"You're not ready to die yet, boy," she says, and she knows it so well, knows exactly how to play her cards. "You want another eternity with him. Hunting and killing and getting what you want. You want to be with him, want to love him, forever, don't you?"

Seifer doesn't know what to say.

Squall does. "Fuck you."

"Squall... don't do it."

"She has a point."

"Squall..."

Squall turns to face Seifer, looks up into his face. He's smiling. And he can't deny that he's hungry, his body starting to ache with the urge, the hunger, the need. He closes his eyes and rests his forehead against Seifer's shoulder. "I love you. And I still owe you one."

"You're going to do this because I turned you?"

"Yeah. It hurt, you bastard."

Seifer nods. Slowly. Reluctantly. "I understand. Squall... hold me while you do it."

Squall looks up at him for a moment, nods, kisses him. Then he takes a metaphorical deep breath and pulls away from his lover. He doesn't look at him again. He just walks forward into the vortex of magic, and he might be starting the cycle again by doing this, but he couldn't bear for it to end. He doesn't want the years of love to be a word spoken into nothing and forgotten, leaving no impression on the world.

Ultimecia smiles.

Seifer is eighteen and arrogant and a sorceress' knight, and he's about to become a vampire.

"Payback," Squall whispers, and that's all he says, and all Seifer can do with his sorceress' control is tip his head back and let it happen, relax into Squall's arms, take the punishment and the reward and the start of a cycle that begins and ends right here.

Oh, man, that's warped and completely awesome, and I love the expression of time paradox. Delicious.
