Baralai had been raised to be clever. Clever and cool and so sickeningly nice that people liked him instantly. He hadn't, however, been raised with love. He'd been raised to manipulate people, and hadn't been loved for that.
It was Gippal that made him change.
Gippal was Al Bhed. Baralai viewed him at first only in the light of an interesting person -- someone who might come in useful later. He extended his friendship to Gippal, and then watched as Gippal fell in love with him. Even that didn't change him.
What changed him was when, a little concerned by Gippal's apparently careless love, he told Gippal that he didn't love him, confessed that he was cruel and that Gippal shouldn't love him. But Gippal just nodded and smiled and said that he knew.
He knew.
That honest, unconditional love, love Baralai had never known before, was what changed him.
