Steiner never thought he'd miss the stupid thief until he was gone. Gone -- just like that -- into the Iifa tree, never to come back and darken (or had that become brighten?) a day with his cocky smile again. Steiner was caught between missing Zidane and wanting to strangle him for leaving Garnet with such pain.
For a while he hated himself for not somehow saving the idiot. Saving Garnet the pain. But Garnet grew up and grew strong and the darkness of grief in her eyes faded.
Steiner was still frustratingly and astonishingly glad to see Zidane with her again.
